Giant’s Causeway, Northern Ireland, UK
The Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland has been shrouded with mystery ever since it was discovered. No one really knows how the rocks formed into almost perfect columns (I just realized my last three post’s have all been about some sort of “pillar” land-form). Most geologist say it’s a result of magma from centuries ago but legend has it that two giant’s, one from Scotland, and one from Ireland were set to do battle so the causeway was built by the Irish giant to make it to Scotland. However the Irish giant fell asleep so the Scottish one came looking for him. The Irish giant’s wife covered him with a blanket and told the Scot that this was the Irish giant’s baby. Seeing how large the “infant” was the Scot thought that his dad must be huge and ran away in panic and ripped up the causeway so he couldn’t be followed. I like that version better! The causeway is also featured on the cover of Led Zeppelin’s Houses of the Holy album. It may be better known than some of my previous posts but certainly not back here in North America. When I show people pictures they always ask woah where is that amazing place? And I always reply, in Northern Ireland! It truly is an exceptional place no one has heard of!
