Hashima Island, Japan
At one time, one of the most densely populated places on the planet was Hashima Island which is just off the coast of Nagasaki, Japan. It is now a ghost island and has been left to crumble. Hashima Island first became populated as a place for coal miners to live rather than having to travel from mainland everyday but as Japan switched away from coal mining there was no money in it anymore and everyone abandoned the island in 1974. The island was officially re-opened to tourists in 2009 and is a proposed UNESCO site. It may seem like an intimating place but is definitely a very unique place. A place that would be fascinating, haunting and memorable.
