Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina has been the centre of many horrible event of the 20th century but Its rich history and natural beauty make it one of my favourite places on the trip. While walking through Sarajevo’s old city it becomes apparent why this place has faced so much trouble. There is literally an Orthodox church, a Catholic church and a Mosque on the same street and they are all competing to be the largest building. I have never visited anywhere like that in the world before and it was certainly something else to hear prayer call and church bells at the same time. Another important place in Sarajevo is the Latin Bridge which is the site of the assassination of Franz Ferdinand which is usually considered to be what triggered WWI. Standing there in that spot and realizing how much the world has changed from that one event… I’m at a loss for words… It is basically one of Europe’s hidden gems that is still somewhat hidden. You must visit Sarajevo before you die. It is just such an important place in the history of the 20th century.
