Wai’ale’ale Crater, Hawaii, USA
So here it is, finally, I have been searching long and hard for this one. I first saw this place right here on tumblr, multiple times, and you probably have as well. But I couldn’t for the life of me find where it was. At one point I was convinced it was a different place and even wrote up a post on it but at the last second realized that I was totally off. I got to the point where I thought this waterfall didn’t even exist in real life. But it does. And here is my post about it.
These series of waterfalls are located in the crater of Mount Wai’ale’ale, Kauai, Hawaii. It has been deemed the wettest spot on earth but there is only minimal scientific evidence to support that. Getting to this amazing spectacle of mother nature is extremely difficult by trail as most of the trail is usually washed away. It is more common (and expensive) to take a helicopter ride over the top of the crater. It is said that the sun is directly over the top of the crater only twice a year, which means seeing this place with no shadows is a once in a life time thing. I should note that while trying to find out about this place I was at one point convinced that Waihilau Falls on Hawaii’s Big Island and this crater were one and the same. I almost drove myself mad trying to count the amount of waterfalls in each place. Take a look for yourself and see if you can spot any differences.
