Chuuk, Micronesia

Chuuk, one of the states of Micronesia is a group of islands located in the south pacific ocean. Together these islands form Truk Lagoon which is a natural safe harbour and contains a barrier reef system. One of the most fascinating things about Chuuk is that during WWII it was a huge naval base for the Japanese. Both the Americans and the Japanese thought it was one of the most strategically important places in the southern pacific. In a secret operation, the Americans came and bombed many of the Japanese navy that was located there to overtake the base from the Japanese. Today you can visit Chuuk and scuba dive into the lagoon to see the remains of these ships, tanks and naval equipment. So not only does Chuuk boast some of the best natural scuba diving but it also has these mysterious war machines entangled in its reef system. I found out about Chuuk from Matt Harding. If you don’t know who he is, YouTube him. He is my constant motivation to Go Traveling!
